Surya Pangestu’s Journey as a Rock Climbing Athlete: Dilemma to Enlightenment from His Father
Surya Pangestu, a young man born on April 18th, 2002, is pursuing a career as a professional athlete in the sport of rock climbing. Since he was a child, he has had the ambition to become an athlete, which was supported by his parents. As a teenager, he was faced with a dilemma between choosing futsal or rock climbing as his sport, especially since he had talent in both fields.
Finally, after seeking guidance, his parents advised him to choose rock climbing. His father was a member of the Mountaineering Club during his youth. Because of this experience, his father suggested that Surya follow in his footsteps. Like the proverb “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” Surya has now become a professional rock climbing athlete.
Love Since Childhood
Surya first became acquainted with rock climbing when he was still very young, in the fifth grade of junior high school when he was 11 years old. At first, Surya thought of rock climbing as a fun activity to train his adrenaline for heights.
As time went by, his love for this sport grew stronger. Surya’s love for sports had already taken root since he was a child. His parents said that Surya found his identity in sports, as seen by how he spent his free time doing physical activities.
“I was confused about choosing to be a rock climbing athlete or a futsal athlete because I enjoyed both and had talent in both sports,” said the 20-year-old man. “Finally, when I was in the second grade of junior high school, I decided to become a rock climbing athlete, following in my parent’s footsteps,” he continued.
Becoming a Professional
At the age of 14, Surya was already registered as an athlete at the Yogyakarta City Training Center for Rock Climbing. Since then, he has continued to focus on rock climbing and aspires to bring glory to his country on the international stage.
Surya has continued to achieve one accomplishment after another over time. When he was 17 years old, he won third place in the men’s team event, a bronze medal, at the Pre-Qualification of the National Sports Week in Surabaya in 2019.
The Mandala Krida Stadium in Yogyakarta bears witness to Surya’s silent struggle to achieve greatness. Despite already being a successful athlete, Surya has often faced various obstacles.
As a professional athlete, every individual should be entitled to personal equipment, including shoes and the like. However, sometimes the distribution of personal equipment assistance is not well organized.
“Although I don’t always receive personal equipment support, I never lose my spirit to keep practicing. I want to bring glory to Indonesia on the international stage,” he added.
Now, Surya is still training to prepare for upcoming competitions. He is committed to winning a medal at the National Sports Week 2024 and being listed as an athlete in the National Training Center.
