“Micro-influencers”, “Mega-influencers”, “Nano-influencers”… It has become common in the influencer marketing space to encounter these kinds of prefixes that attempt to describe an influencer’s relative following or reach in a ballpark estimate of scale.

The problem is that while brands, agencies, and influencers understand the need for such descriptive terms, our industry has not broadly agreed on how they are strictly defined. At what number of followers does a “nano-influencer” become a “micro-influencer”? When does a “micro-influencer” become a regular “influencer”? Do you weigh Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram followers the same way and sum them all up to decide if someone is a “micro-influencer”, or just look at their Instagram reach?

ACTIVATE provides influencer tier filters that start from a broad definition and then gives you tools to customize these definitions to tailor fit your business needs.

Define your Own Influencer Tiers

While it’s good to pay attention to trends in the influencer space, like the recent focus on micro influencers, we also encourage that marketers form an influencer strategy that works for their brand. As you activate creators with different reaches, you’ll begin to see patterns in what types of influencers are the best fit for you. From there, you can group influencers of a certain reach based on the type of activations you would collaborate with them on.

For example, maybe influencers with 10k — 25k are called your “gifting & sampling” influencers who you send free product samples and gifts, and creators with 10k — 25k are your go-to’s for event activations.

“As influencer marketing becomes a more sought after solution for global brands, the definition of micro versus macro is evolving. It’s important for brands to retain the power to define the network parameters that work for them, as influencer followership can vary drastically depending on the category focus, territory and intended consumer demographic.

We see the importance in tracking the up and coming talent, someone who may have been ‘micro’ a year ago may have grown significantly since — the ability to track this dynamically allows us as marketers to manage our influencer relationships efficiently.”

Customized for Your Strategy

Our newest feature supports the ability for you to discover and vet influencers based on tiers personalized for your needs. You can customize the name and reach ranges of each of your tiers and once saved, you can easily see which tier influencers on ACTIVATE belong to all across the platform.

If your influencer strategy is focused on working with influencers between 50k — 250k monthly pageviews for their blog, you can adjust your tiers to specifically focus on blogs and creators within that range. As the following of your influencers increases, their tier status will dynamically update to reflect their social growth.
