Learn about the tools to find the songs you need

One of Blokur’s key benefits is our expansive database that has works from all major and most independent publishers. In order for this data to have value for its users, a useful search tool is needed to able to sift through the millions of songs and find the works that have information users need. Looking for a song can be tedious especially when the tools limit you from the information. Here are some functions of our search tool that might help your process.

Filters

To filter your search by a specific criteria such as a song title, just click the relevant button below the search bar. For example, if you search Nirvana and click Title, Blokur will ignore the artist Nirvana and search only for the songs titles.

If you are viewing a specific song and would like to see more songs by the same artist, songwriter or publisher just click on name of the relevant individual or company, and Blokur will show you a list of all connected songs.

Getting More Specific

When searching for a song by title, if the song has a common name, sometimes the list of results can get quite long. To find the song you want more quickly, just type the title and either the writer or the artist together in the same search. For example last resort papa roach will bring Last Resort by Papa Roach to the top of the results. No need to specify which is the title and which is the artist since the search algorithm will look for the best match for a work that contains BOTH “Last Resort” AND “Papa Roach” in ANY of the fields.

“Exact Search”

Exact search lists results first the exact words used in the search, as opposed to an algorithmic balance of the term and the popularity of the song.

To activate it, a user just needs to wrap their search terms in double quotes “”.

For example if you search the song Song 2 written by Damon Albarn, there are many results if only searching the title without quotation marks.

For exact search, you can just type in “Song 2” and the search algorithm will look for the best match for a work that contains “Song 2”.

If you are using exact search for the song title and adding on a writer or artist name, occasionally the exact song might not appear in the top results as shown below.

In this case, our recommendation is to use exact search for both terms by typing in parentheses onto the writer’s name as well.

Title Order

When searching for works from an artist or writer, you are now able to arrange the search results via ascending order if you’d like.

By clicking on “Title” you can order the artist or songwriters works in A-Z order. When you click “Title” again it will go back to the algorithmic order.
