Blokur’s mission is to fulfill the potential of the internet for the creator and is a music rights platform for music publishers and music users. We have built a database of over 30 million works with songs directly sourced from publishers and have built tools for them to utilize the global rights picture we’re building to help save them time and money in rights administration. Music Publishers can maximize their income, clean and enrich their data and license their music to content creators and companies.

Blokur’s lifeblood is song data. In order for us to ingest and present global rights data on our platform the delivery process from publishers to send us their works needs to be as smooth as possible. Although we pride ourselves on flexibility and adaptability, there are certain preferred methods of delivery that will ensure a quicker and easier process.

We are proud to have added another easy way to deliver your data to Blokur. Our newest function is called the “Song Wizard” which will allow you to get an immediate start on setting up your publisher account. With our new Song Wizard you can follow each simple step which guides you through uploading your data through just a few clicks. You will either have the option to upload an existing file you have or register your individual works.

If you choose to register your first works via the “Song Wizard” you will come across a series of prompts.

Once you have finished the steps, we will ingest the data and will send you login information. Ingestion usually takes around a week.

To upload multiple works at once, you can drag and drop a file of the formats below:

Formats of data accepted:

  1. CWR Files
  2. Blokur Excel Template
  3. PRO Catalog Exports
  4. Your existing catalog files (in some cases)
  5. Music Maestro
  6. Blokur’s Song Wizard (upon signing up)
  • CWR files have become a standard format in the industry and are becoming more widely used internationally. CWR stands for Common Works Registration, and is a protocol and data format for the registration of musical works. Ideally, a publisher creates a single CWR file and sends it to societies all over the world as well as Blokur. Tools to create CWR Files: Resource 1, Resource 2
  • The Blokur Excel Template is not only a great way to ingest your songs on to our platform, however it’s a great way to self organize your catalog for internal company usage. You can download the template HERE and download the work example HERE.
  • Even though PRO Catalogue Exports don’t have all the information we would like, they have been a great way to get a publishing account set up as they have some basic, vital information needed for ingestion. Note that we cannot ingest formats from every PRO. In the past we have successfully ingested exports from ASCAP, BMI and PRS.
  • Since Music Maestro is also a common organization method, we support those files as well.
  • Reviewing your existing catalogue is also an option however it must include most of the fields in the next section.

What information we need

Blokur’s value proposition is based on being able to present a highly detailed global rights picture of every work. In order to do that we need specific data points:

  • Chain of Title
  • Role/Class
  • Name
  • IPI Number
  • Control Status
  • Performance Rights Organization (PRO)
  • Mechanical Society
  • Performance Share Collection
  • Mechanical Share Collection
  • ISWC Number
  • Internal Work ID
  • Song Title
  • Song Duration
  • Territory Control

Not every data point is mandatory for ingestion, but most are needed to build a valuable rights picture. For the definitions of these terms, click here.

Ingestion

Once a file has been received we go through an internal process of ingestion. We have an internal parsing and matching process where we illuminate duplicates, match compositions to recordings, and then verify via third party partnerships. When this process finishes, the publisher will be able to view their works, see conflicts that were identified in our ingestion process as well as access our growing suite of publisher services.
