What We Can Learn from ‘Whitopia’

By 2042, the total number of non-Hispanic white people in America will be outnumbered by the total combined number of Hispanic, African-American, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people, according to the United States Census Bureau.

But, there are certain areas of our country which predominantly have been, and strangely continue to be, primarily white despite the growing number of minorities in America. Curious about these areas, African American journalist Rich Benjamin went on a 27,000 mile journey spanning two years, exploring the whitest cities and counties in America. When his journey ended, he wrote and published a book regarding his experience in 2009 titled “Searching for Whitopia: An Improbable Journey to the Heart of White America”, in which he which coined the term “Whitopia.”
