Bonding Through Challenging Times

I previously wrote about the pandemic keeping us physically apart but technological means bringing us even closer than before. This time, courtesy to our lovely (now ex :( ) intern Yanni, the team was challenged to eat and dress in one colour only 24hrs, and I must say it was a pretty fun bonding session for the team (at least in the eyes of the editor) albeit doing it individually and only being able to connect with each other virtually.

The rules were straightforward, you get a colour, you eat, drink and wear that colour for 24 hours. Looks simple, but tougher than you think to achieve.

From left to right: Hidayah and her blue pancakes, Sherri and her green bowl, Diogo with his red pasta before getting his tongue burnt with chillies

As you’d expect, some colours were more challenging than others, especially when it came to food. I’d say the difficult ones were blue, black and maybe pink. Despite that, some of the team still came through with stellar attempts like Hidayah with blue — The only ingredient I can think of that is truly blue is butterfly pea, and she used that to turn her pancakes and rice blue. Lisa being creative with her pink — love the P!nk playlist and those socks! And the rest who took the time and effort to shop and cook their meals (re: Sherri cooking that yummy but not so green pesto pasta). Shoutout to Diogo for turning it into a red hot spicy challenge as well, hope your stomach’s okay! Meanwhile, some of us get easy colours and still fail blatantly… *slowly exits the room*

Even though we did it on different days and time, it was fun catching up whenever someone was doing it that day — like hearing Diogo repeatedly complain about listening to Lady in Red on loop. And when all the clips were stitched together, we marvelled at the impressive attempts, laughed at the failed attempts, and raised our eyebrows at the cheating attempts.

Team’s reaction to the video

There are a few takeaways: blueberries are not blue when blended, pesto doesn’t turn out as green as it looks, and that Cadbury chocolate isn’t purple. But of course, that despite being a ‘distanced’ activity, it could still create a sense of togetherness. What was meant to be Yanni’s departure gift (?) became a unique and enjoyable (minus Diogo) bonding activity. Not to mention, also makes for great content.

And creating inside jokes for the future

Surely, these challenges aren’t for everyone or every team, and there are plenty of games to play virtually. Some of the favourites we play during our TGIF Friyay! sessions are Pictionary (skribbl.io), Fibbage from Jack Box Party Games, and most recently, Among Us — Intense guess-who’s-the-betrayer mobile game that’s currently really popular (video coming soon!).

Nonetheless, thank you Yanni for putting us up to this challenge, we miss you❤ and for the team for joining in. Now off to get some cheese and ketchup for Nikhita’s challenge, stay tuned!
