The best and worst of 2020 (We took a vote!)
Say it with me: “What. A. Year.”
Before we start, there are 2 things you should know.
The first is it is an unanimous decision that 2020 has been a (insert bad word that rhymes with clusterduck) of a year. Pretty sure everyone has had a pretty weird year (except maybe Jeff Bezos and the tech geniuses that don’t seem to be affected by plebeian affairs), as illustrated by the questionable happenings, trends and memes that has spawned out of this pandemic.
The second thing you need to know is that the Bloomr.SG team is made up of 10 very different individuals. Most of us have vastly different tastes, hobbies and obsessions (Ng Man Tat and Guam — have you heard those two in the same conversation?) and yet the one thing we have in common, is that we all consume A LOT of content on a daily basis.
And so with that, we decided that on one random Wednesday morning, the Bloomr.SG kids sat down in front of our webcams, ready to go through an intensive debate session, put down some solid arguments and make some really tough choices.
I kid, it was really tame and we were all really friendly.
But without further ado, I present to you the Bloomr.SG Choice Awards 2020: Quarantine Edition (or should I say, Quaran-teen Choice Awards) (hehe)
Best Meme
We started off with a category that drew many interesting contenders; from international to local and even to the supernatural.
But of course, the team is largely Singaporean so how could we not vote for our very own East Coast Plan?
Best Social Video
This one was really broad, it could literally be any video on any social network and we did see many entries from TikTok to Instagram and Youtube.
“This actually reminds me of Sherri when she talks.”
Fingers crossed he’s just referring to the way I move closer to the mic and not that I’m the co-worker that everyone secretly hates. :/
Best Advertisement
How could we not? We literally make good ads for a living.
If you haven’t heard the Foodpanda rap, go give it a listen and we’ll wait.
Best Piece of News
Alright, ngl this one really shows you where our priorities are.
I mean, Phase 1 and Phase 3 are cool but can anything really trump the return of the Chicken McCrispy? Was Mcdonald’s just casually sitting on the recipe for 18 years, waiting for a terribly bad year just to present us with this shining beacon of hope? I guess we’ll never know.
Best Comeback
Again with the Mcdonald’s!
Best Song/Podcast
Thanks to TikTok, Savage is now a song that you see instead of hear.
Best Series/Movie/Game/Book
Another broad category that brought up some popular games and series of various genres.
The Queen’s Gambit gets awarded first place with 4 votes, Emily in Paris got 3 (what?!) and Start-up received a grand total of -1 for its subpar ending.
Best COVID-19 Hack
This is our way of making lemonade in a pandemic.
“I finally figured out the pleasure of sleeping.” Never too late, welcome to the club!
But alas, Tara’s entry won the Best COVID Hack because it’ll come in handy if we forget our masks and don’t have $300 to spare.
Worst Moment
How could we forget the worst moment of 2020? I mean, can one entire year be counted as a single worst moment?
No disputes, however, for Lisa’s nomination; “gaining weight” counted collectively as Bloomr.SG’s worst moment with all 10 votes.
Worst Trend
Has anybody figured out the Wolfpack trend on TikTok yet or has 2020 simply been too stressful for everyone so we’re just gonna let it slide?
And there you have it, Bloomr.SG’s best and worst of 2020 with some unanimous winners (if you said you didn’t gain weight during circuit breaker then please teach me the ways of life, senpai) and some surprising dark horses.
On a personal note for me, it was a rollercoaster year watching the travel industry, and life in general, get chokeslammed by COVID-19. I, for one, started 2020 by worrying about the Aussie fires and if it would affect my then-upcoming trip in Feb. That honestly seemed like the biggest issue at that time (LOL) but on hindsight, that was just about the tip of the iceberg as we marched on into 2020 and well, you know how the rest of the year pans out.
But if this pandemic has taught me anything, it’s that we all need to count the little things to help us get through the tough times and I have (very fortunately) escaped the worst of 2020 relatively unscathed.
Here’s hoping 2021 is way better but let’s not jinx it. Happy New Year, folks!
