Desirable Downy Serviceberry

Early Spring Joy

--

The Downy Serviceberry, AKA Saskatoonberry is a small, flowering and fruiting tree native to Canada. (Read more about it at this link, Amelanchier_canadensis )

I have two of them in our garden because it provides early visual appeal, food for the birds and brilliant fall colour.

It is one of the first shrubs or small trees to flower, lovely to have when it is still cold out!

Once the flowers are done, it begins to produce the attractive fruit, starting out green, turning to red and then purple when fully ripe. The robins hover expectantly near the bushes, constantly checking until they think the fruit is ripe enough, then they dive in and plunder.
