Black mangrove roots grow up from the sand, absorbing oxygen at low tide and providing protection for juvenile fish species like this snapper. Bimini, Bahamas.

I remember the first time I saw deep tropical ocean water. The electric blue of it didn’t seem real. Neither did the spectrum of gemstone colors from the deep sapphire blues to the peridot, translucent green-gold topped with white foam brushing the tops of my feet in the sand. I tried to pick my favorite of the colors. I couldn’t. Instead, I chose a place on the spectrum, a shifting point of blue and green where the land met the sea. Where the sciences of oceanography, chemistry, climate, ecology, and marine biology meet the art, creativity, and emotional human experience of all that is The Ocean.

Blue Green.

Although the only waves near me now are “amber waves of grain,” everything I do impacts the ocean. The resources I use, the food I eat, the byproducts of my existence that enter streams, flow to rivers, and to the sea. The ocean, in its turn, impacts me and all of us, quietly absorbing the brunt of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere, protecting us even as we destroy it just going about our daily lives. Reefs are dying, glaciers melting. Life as we know it is changing on both land and sea.

This blog is dedicated to the point where ocean and land meet. The science, discoveries, ecosystems, state of life on earth and in water, our human impact and the actions we can take to preserve our Blue Green world.

This content is entirely my view from over 30 years of writing about environment and conservation. The content does not reflect any political slant or employer. There are no advertisers, no hype or hyperbole (i.e. clickbait), and no agenda other than encouraging others to care about this amazing planet. Probably no readers, either, but if you find this space, thanks for showing up. Let’s dive in.
