Raiders!
Adelyn’s charcoal pencil froze mid-stroke. She would never get to finish her drawing. Footsteps echoed faintly from the street outside, but no one was supposed to be around.
This was bad.
She wasn’t even supposed to be here, inside this crumbling old store. She should have been foraging in the abandoned houses just outside of town. The pickers would have long combed through the stores along main street already.
But there was something beautiful and empty about the city that drew her. She loved imagining what life was like before the fall. Sidewalks full of people, walking and laughing. Children playing. Cars on the roads.
Now the sidewalks were bare and the buildings had been empty for decades. And the only cars that were left were pictures in books.
Inside the abandoned store, the air was hard to breathe, heavy with the smell of mildew and decay. She looked around in near panic. More footsteps echoed along the abandoned street.
It could only be raiders. If she needed to hide she would find a place amongst the sagging shelves and…
