Liora ran. She ran until her heart felt like it would burst from her chest. Her breath burned hot in her throat, her cheeks flushed against the cool autumn air.
She reached the village, gasping, her legs trembling, almost crying with relief. Ulric wouldn’t be far behind. The familiar cobblestone streets seemed to tilt beneath her feet and her vision blurred. Her head felt heavy, as if it were full of white fog and her thoughts slowed to a crawl.
What could she do to protect herself?
Men like Ulric were like dogs with a bone. They could never let it go. She’d have to be forever on guard.
Mum would know what to do.
