Blue Sky Republic’s National Dish: Rustic Carrot and Ginger Orzo with a Touch of Heat

Led by Arne van Oosterom and with help from Sous Chef, this dish was invented with ingredients picked by the Blue Sky Republic Editorial Team.

As you can see, the dish exudes warmth and comfort, making it perfect for a cozy dinner accompanied by country music and a kind blessing.

Rustic Carrot and Ginger Orzo with a Touch of Heat (Servings - 4 people approx.)

Ingredients

Fresh Produce:
• Carrots (about 4 medium-sized) [Maarten’s pick]
• Fresh ginger (a small root, about 2 inches) [Arne’s pick]
• Snow peas (optional, about 1 cup) [Aysar’s pick]

Pasta & Grains:
• Orzo pasta (1 cup) [Kylie’s pick]

Sauces & Condiments:
• Soy sauce (small bottle) [Mimp’s pick]
• Black sesame seeds (a small packet) [Yuen Yen’s pick]
• Your favorite hot sauce (one bottle) [Hope’s pick]

Sweeteners:
• Rock sugar (or brown sugar as a substitute, about 1/4 cup) [Yvonne’s pick]

Miscellaneous:
• Olive oil or cooking oil of your choice
• Salt and pepper to taste

Atmosphere for cooking:

• Music in the background “Something like that” by Tim McGraw [Morgan’s pick] and a selection of your favorite country songs
• A candle or soft lighting to create a warm ambiance
• A kind blessing or toast before the meal [Pak’s pick]

Recipe Steps:

  1. Prepare the Orzo: Cook the orzo pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Carrots and Ginger: Peel and dice the carrots, and mince the ginger. In a pan, heat a little oil and sauté the carrots and ginger until the carrots are tender and the ginger is fragrant.
  3. Create the Sauce: Dissolve rock sugar in a small amount of water over low heat to create a syrup. Mix in soy sauce and your favorite hot sauce to taste. Adjust the balance of sweet and heat according to your preference.
  4. Combine: Add the cooked orzo to the pan with the carrots and ginger. Pour the sauce over the orzo and mix well. Let it simmer for a few minutes for the flavors to meld.
  5. Finish with Flair: Sprinkle black sesame seeds over the dish just before serving for a nutty, decorative touch. If using, add snow peas in the last few minutes of cooking for a bright and crunchy element.
  6. Set the Scene: As you plate the dish, play some soothing country music in the background. Light a candle for a warm, inviting atmosphere.
  7. Serve with a Blessing: Before serving, share a kind blessing or a heartfelt toast to enrich the dining experience with positivity and warmth.

We hope you enjoyed this national dish as much as we did inventing this.
