POETRY
An Indian daughter
An artistic interpretation of many realities
An Indian daughter
Is a glass vase assumed unbreakable,
Is a glass vase thrown to the ground over, and over,
Is a glass vase without permission to break,
If the vase breaks, it’s the vase’s fault.
An Indian daughter
Is a quiet specimen that obeys all the Earth,
Is a quiet specimen that should not talk,
Is a quiet specimen that should not stay quiet,
If the specimen talks (or doesn’t talk), it is worthless.
An Indian daughter
Is a doll waiting to be decorated,
Is a doll with no choice of its ornaments,
Is a doll with no mouth to complain,
If the doll has a problem, the doll is the problem.
An Indian daughter
Is a Goddess walking the Earth,
Is a Goddess that is absolute perfection,
Is a Goddess with no right to falter,
If the Goddess falls, she is Satan.
An Indian daughter
Is a prize, coveted and cherished,
Is a prize that can be easily won,
Is a prize with no sparkle,
If the prize shines, it is fake.
An Indian daughter
Is a wrinkle pleading to straighten itself,
Is a wrinkle artificially made,
Is a wrinkle considered permanent,
If the wrinkle fades — no, wrinkles should not fade.
An Indian daughter
Is pain pretending to be poetry.
