Does innocence have to be fleeting?

I admit I haven’t always taken
the best care of you
but now I beg you to stay
and never walk away from me.
We were in this together,
don’t let me face this alone.

I took you for granted but I see now
that without you there is no me.
If there’s no us, there’s no point.

When the fog came I forgot you
and became selfish — self less — less
like myself, and I only longed for
what I was missing — you.

The fleeting heat from steam tried to
comfort me then steal you away.
But the lukewarmth couldn’t penetrate
my icy borders that only you can melt
when we’re alone.

Please don’t walk away,
you are the part of me
that holds every piece
together and calms the
fiercest storms in my eyes.

Without you I will freeze
internally, eternally,
and I will bite with frigid icicles
the moment anyone tries
to see beyond the glacial sea
I will have to guard myself with.

Innocence, My Innocence,
please stay with me.

Do not let me become
the cynical storm
that walks the earth.

Please stay and help me find the good
that shivers in shrinking shelters from
the hail of this world.
