A Poem

Photo by Carlos de Miguel on Unsplash
  1. Soil

where is the child
from the rock garden

did you leave her sleeping
there under the willow
majestic and secret
were her fortress names

too young for fantasy
too old for reality

a drought
blew through
her dangerous, delicate
future —

acres left untended
were traded in

for sidewalks
the look of contentment
suburban security

2. Seed

see what’s become
of the girl
staring out the bay window
over goldens, crimsons, rusts

autumns of empty waiting
for his car to appear
over the hill

when will she turn away
and realize he is not driving
this way

lessons
still unwritten
in chalk

glass streaked with hand prints
and foggy letters of
adolescent longing
