Fervid Zeal
A poem
In views that cease to wonder,
And a blotted scarlet gaze —
Before the roaring thunder
Comes the flashing lightning rays.
Supreme, almighty power
Yields to none, no teeth or stone,
Save the minute and the hour,
The briefest moment to be known.
Blink and miss it, if you dare,
You can and will still feel its force,
Unbridled energy in the air
Wreaking havoc with no remorse.
Frozen crystals hung suspended
Above the lakebed whence they came,
Glistening beautifully where upended,
In contrast to the coming days.
The sky will crack until it dims,
The ground will burn until it’s glazed,
The sea will roil till it brims,
Then silence will fill the space.
Holy light and wrathful flames,
Tempered steel and shattered glass —
When this light begins to wane,
Fervid zeal approaches fast.
To know the might of heaven’s eyes
And compare to what it incites,
Implies omnipotence by design
And a mind wrought by immortal light.
