Standing at a window, a hot cup of coffee in hand, watching rain beat down on parched plants — this is a cleansing routine. Something about watching the rain and listening to the sounds of fat droplets falling on different surfaces is cathartic.

I love watching the rain — from indoors where I am snug and dry. I enjoy the smell of wet earth — it has a name — petrichor. I feel excited when I see rain clouds gathering. I enjoy watching the birds scurrying around trying to find shelter before the rain starts pelting down.

Sometimes when it is dreamy and breezy and rainy, I stand on my balcony and let the spray wash my face. When my daughter was younger, we used to hang around on the balcony letting the rain cover our hair with diamond-like droplets and revel in the magic of it all.

During Holi, the festival of colors, my apartment complex puts up a makeshift rain dance area where people splash color on each other and dance to pulsating Bollywood music. Then again, community living is not the only answer to rain dance. There are a few resorts around Bangalore where rain dance is one of the attractions. During offsite trips planned by some of the companies I worked with, I’ve gone with my teams and enjoyed a jolly hour of dance under artificial rain accompanied by…
