you knew not what
sound rose from
the city’s
bowels —

a haunting sound,
a sound of protest
from both the
dead and the
living

underneath the neon,
the plastic shopping
bags, the whispering
sound of money
changing hands

far below the sound
of food halls and
shopping malls

you could hear
the deep plates
slowly grind
underground
in the middle
of the night

industrial scars,
fault lines, and
something like
a low, deep
hum

you could almost
hear the night’s
descent, her
acid rain, the
beating of her
dark, dark
heart
