Shivering waves of evening rain
pounding against my windows,
a thousand mile storm crawling
its way across the North Atlantic,
waiting to pounce upon our little island…
just another spring day on Cape Cod.

Fireplace on, glasses in hand, dogs
asleep in our laps, just us, just now,
just this moment of lost time we
thought we would never find,
those dream years of no longer
young, but not quite old.

Our kids hidden away in their own
homes, tucking in their own kids,
starting the lives we happily
finished, those middle years
of full out and all in that consumed
us, maybe almost ended us, now
the end years of holding hands
and quiet walks along the beaches
we were too busy to explore
when we were so busy being busy
we couldn’t breathe.
