Stuck —
my eyes are stuck and I don’t care,
but my ears are ringing —
oh, it’s my alarm

Ugh, I did this.

I set this alarm and now we’re all awake —
or at least rolling around and rubbing our faces
like we just got pepper sprayed
by the rays from the streetlight outside
sneaking in through the crack in the blackout curtain,
creating the blinding butt-crack of dawn.

Ugh

I mumble some slurred form of “sorry”
to my husband and decide to just
roll with the punches my dog throws at me
as he grumbles more than I do.

Ugh

I roll out of bed with my feet hitting the floor
almost as hard as I hit my alarm. Stumbling
and stepping over my hallucinations because
my brain is a foggy, sleepy, smoggy mess
in the A.M because I AM TIRED

Ugh

The shower takes way too long to get warm
but I am running late so I shiver and speed
through my routine so I skip the shave, oh well!
Moving at a glacial pace through the
mundane morning tasks like the brushing
of teeth and hair and the extra face
washing and whatever else is “necessary”
to fulfill the third-world standards of “basic”
and I grab the first shirt I touch and pair it with
some “professional” yet stretchy comfy pair of pants
and mismatched socks because no one can see them
under my moccasins that are secretly just slippers
disguised as shoes

Ugh

Caffeine, please! Just give it to me
in any form whether it be
energy drinks, coffee, or a chocolate espresso bean!
I cannot cure this zombie-like disease
of lack of sleep
without my daily does of thee.

Ugh

Breakfast? There’s no time
I just need to keep moving
and maybe if everything
I have had this morning
is 100% caffeine then
it will be more potent…?
I think I read that somewhere once
Where?
That’s unimportant, because
maybe I wrote it.

Ugh

It’s time to go.
Let’s get this day started
because with every minute
that passes I am closer to ending
the day with the sweet sleep I crave.
