Empathic Considerations

1.) One theme is about not wanting others to worry about you when you’re sick. This is evident with Ellie who has a miscarriage and is infertile. She does not live long, but she always changes Carl’s ties with all their colorful designs and patterns, eventually turning into bowties.

She tries to energetically climb up the hill to see the wider world in the clouds above, where once before they saw clouds that resembled babies — lots and lots of babies. However, that youthful spirit dissipates with her illness, despite her resolve to make sure Carl is not worried.

Changing Perceptions

2.) Another theme is that the person you look up to might be looking down on you. This is evident with Carl who looks up to Charles Muntz at first, alongside Ellie. They both believe that being adventurous nature-loving people is the greatest achievement of all.

However, after Ellie dies, Carl decides to go to Paradise Falls (no, not Niagra Falls, you silly Billy).

Once there, Carl realizes that while Charles has many dogs under his control, he does not necessarily care about the native…
