Poetry-Cleansed

A poem about poetry

Tortured skin hangs,
won’t let loose,
can’t wrest free,
can’t pull or twist or yank
the withered husk of
my being, leftovers
of an unnamed trauma

tearful ordeal or
melancholy memory,
from a time no longer
numbered but not
yet forgotten.

I scrub the sheath
but still, it hangs —
no less attached,
no less removed,
like mildew greening
a bathroom wall.

I set aside brush,
soap and water —
take pen in
trembling hand
and write what
can’t be said,
can’t be scrubbed.

The birth of a poem
from dead skin
that loosens its grip
with each black
mark against white

with each letter,
tear-smeared —
with each memory,
ink-washed —
with each sad or mad,
poetry-cleansed.

My mirrored image,
free of hanging chads
from yesterdays,
reflecting
why I write
poetry.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
