Sailing into the Future Alone
Do I dare to embrace that?
My mind was a rudderless boat
Drifting back to then
When infinity stretched
Beyond the horizon
To lift the sun each day
Bringing light
And flights of birds
Their fanfare welcoming the morning
But nothing lasts forever
Days became dark nights
Without stars or moon
Leaving only Venus visible
To taunt me with love lost
Months were erasers
Failing in their mission
Made for meaningless pencil sketches
Ineffective against
The permanent ink of memories
The crunch — not shoes on gravel
But a half-empty jar of peanut butter
I gave away one day
Unable to accept his morning toast
Had become obsolete because
Dead men don’t eat
Though those you loved
Eat away at you
Leaving you empty inside
Hungering for one more day
One more breakfast
One more smile
One more kiss
