Recently my former student and current friend and hairstylist were diagnosed with cancer. It’s been a white-knuckled three months as she waits for a proper diagnosis and the appointments that she needs to get some help. The powers that be in the medical community have been spinning their wheels due to her lack of insurance. She and her husband both own small businesses, and they are financially solvent. However, without insurance, all it would take is one medical procedure to wipe out their savings. She is now in too much pain to work.

Finally, after much cajoling, my friend allowed me to help her by giving her a ride home from an appointment. She has a husband and a sister who help, but she now has daily appointments, and they have jobs.

If you need a dose of reality about your blessings in life, spend a few minutes in the lobby of a cancer center. I observed a man enter the lobby of the center. He was using a walker complete with portable oxygen. He turned and said “hello” to me before he sat down. He was very friendly.
