Speak of Me
In memory of my mother
My child I know it’s been long,
I am sure my absence was hard on you,
Certainly, it was hard on you all,
But surely enough time has passed,
And you can begin to recall things well,
Memories that make you smile,
Like the long mother-daughter chats,
The ones where your father will exit for fear of overhearing ‘girl’s-chat’
The bedtime stories my mother once told me,
The long drives from church,
The smiling photos behind birthday cakes,
And very eventful family morning devotions
Surely you remember the things I taught you,
I was more than a mother,
I befriended you too,
Surely where life has brought you now,
You understand everything completely
Surely you will live long and prosper,
For I raised good and wise children,
I can see you all striving,
Starting ventures and doing big life things,
Now that adulthood has found you all,
Surely you can find time to speak of me,
for now, it is time to pass it on,
For you are the ones who remember,
So, pass it on to those who may not remember as much as you do,
Do not keep silent
For in the years of silence,
The few memories you have will fade.
