The Power of Waves
If my heart had a shoreline

The power of waves
Never ending
Relentless
Changing every shoreline
Humans like to watch the waves
Crash upon the shore
Towering fountains of mist
The inevitable forces of nature
I paused by the water
For only a moment
Found myself swept out to sea by a tsunami of sadness
A rip tide of despair
Floundering
Waves of disbelief break over my head
No lifeguard to save me
My fate in your hands
Can I count on you?
Will you rescue me?
Or did you summon the waves,
Problem solved…
Waves know no time
Have no countenance
Inexorable as they erode the shore
Their uncompromising violence
Sometimes subtle
Sometimes conspicuous
Always insistent
If my heart had a shoreline
Would it be soft and sandy?
Picturesque
But easily eroded
Rocky and rough?
Pebbles and boulders
Able to stand stalwart against tide and time
Most likely it would resemble
The ravaged remnants of a beach-resort town
Foundations washed away
Pilings bent and leaning
Roads ruined
Playgrounds pilloried
Village vanquished
Impossible to see how recovery can even begin
Where does one start
To pick up after the storm?
