Stone cat and Praying Mantis photo by Deborah Barchi

The Stone Cat sits outside my door,

a sturdy friend with an inscrutable smile.

In summer a perch for a mantis or moth.

In winter a sentinel, chin deep in snow.

What wisdom, what patience, what love can I learn

from my steadfast friend the Stone Cat

with her inscrutable smile?
