Back to VMworld!

Another year, and another great VMworld conference in Barcelona. We attended it thanks to HPE to see first-hand the cloud computing and virtualisation news brought by VMware and other manufacturers. The range of novelties presented shows the commitment to never stop developing and improving all their portfolio.

One of them new products that caught our attention is was WaveFront, recently acquired by VMware. It is a cloud-hosted monitor which allows you to collect metrics from almost any product/cloud and which has very interesting features:

  • Advance Analytics
  • Enhanced user Experience
  • Intelligent Alerting
  • Flexible API
  • Massively Integrated

These features make for some handy solutions for the enterprise:

  • Applications monitoring
  • Containers monitoring
  • Serverless monitoring
  • Infrastructure monitoring

The most important features of the product are:

  • Advance Analytics
  • Enhanced user Experience
  • Intelligent Alerting
  • Flexible API
  • Massively Integrated

We also attended several of the sessions scheduled within the event.

Session1: What’s New with vSphere 6.7 Core Storage

In this session were presented the different improvements introduced in VMFS6 as well as in XCOPY: the new automatic UNMAP and the new improved storage policy of Round Robin (RR) which is now able to determine the latency for each one of the ways. This allows it to distribute the IOPS in a more efficient way.

Session2: Composable Infrastructure Innovations: Cloud Foundation and HPE Synergy

Here we learned about Composable Infrastructure that has a well-established track record of infrastructure innovation and success. Converged Infrastructure, software-defined management, and hyper-converged systems have consistently proven to increase operational efficiency by eliminating silos and freeing available compute, storage, and networking resources. They designed a new architecture that can meet the growing demands for a faster, more open, and continuous infrastructure.

Also, Infosight, the new HPE software was introduced. It is based on Nimble and hosted 100% in Cloud Foundation. This software is a learning machine that collects data from all HPE devices and has the ability to foresee and prevent infrastructure problems. The idea is to eliminate the first and second support layer.

Session3: vSphere DRS Enhancements: vSphere 6.7 and Beyond

vSphere DRS is without a doubt one of the most important improvements of this version. They have recreated the algorithm almost completely: now, it is able to collect much more information to improve the decisions it makes. As commented in the exposition, this directly increases the effectiveness of DRS operations. It offers the following enhancements:

  • New initial placement
  • Host maintenance mode enhancements
  • DRS support for non-volatile memory (NVM)
  • Enhanced resource pool reservations
