Blunt But Effective

Posts like this are what make blogs worth reading; it’s too bad we don’t have an equivalent for every industry out there. But for movie making in particular, I think a lot of starry-eyed people out there need to hear your advice and what’s more a lot of would-be book authors need to hear it too. Translated: no one wants to publish your fucking book (even if it’s good).

There are two ways to succeed in life, whatever your chosen endeavor. Method 1: you have both talent and insane connections that help you to quickly get you an opportunity other people wouldn’t get.

Method 2: you have talent and a willingness to work harder than every other person you see trying to do what you do. You critique your work more, you iterate more, you sleep less, you work hard enough to truly perfect your idea. And perfection usually takes a really long time whether you write scripts, do sidewalk art with chalk, brew beer, or something else.

Maybe the best line is “…and by just getting started [I mean your first 10 years];” that may not be literally true in all industries but it for sure is true in all creative industries. Film-making, music, writing, dance, whatever — 10 years is nothing. It’s a lifestyle internship in your chosen field.

Keep at it and congrats on Panopticon! Bad-ass dude, bad-ass.
