Who is Magnus Carlsen? He is the reigning chess champion of the world in classical time format. He has been since 2013. Click this link.

He has recently declared he will not defend his title against anyone other than Alireza Firouzja. Click this link.

Magnus Carlsen is the highest rated player ever. I have stated the problems with the Elo rating system many times before. Click this link.

If you click on the links above and read them, you will understand the back story for what I am about to write. What would it take for him to reach 2900?

Well, for starters, he is going to have to do it with the Elo rating system and by playing chess. These may seem obvious, but there are some real drawbacks to both (no pun intended — as you’ll see). The Elo rating system is very slow for one thing. And, for another thing, it is notorious for lowering the rating of the player who wins a tournament if there’s a significant gap in the ratings. Carlsen has held such a gap for a number of years now. Getting Elo to not lower his rating even when he wins an event will have to mean that he dominates the event.
