If you’ve read short stories and novels from the golden age of science-fiction, or seen old science-fiction movies and TV shows, you’ll have some idea what people in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s expected of the future.

People expected flying cars, rocket ships and holidays in space. Back down at ground level, however, holding pride of place amongst their expectations was the idea that our homes would by now be serviced by robots.

These would be multi-purpose, humanoid robots. They would be able to bring your drinks, cook the dinner and clean the house. And their artificial intelligence would mean you could have a normal conversation with them as easily and fluently as you could with any human.

But, like the flying cars, these androids just haven’t turned up. And judging by what we’ve seen of the Tesla bot, they may not be coming any time soon either.

The future has failed to arrive — and we’re left wondering why.

What’s gone wrong?
