Appearance for Management

-Social hierarchies have been present in human society for millennia. Over this time social cues have developed for those on the top. Making use of these cues is very important for those in management positions because it will help others naturally recognize you as a leader. Quick recognition of who is in charge will make the business environment more efficient and pleasant.

For actions to be leader-like one must look like a leader. Looks hold importance because before the start of interactions between people judgments are made based on appearance.

Here are controllable aspects of physical appearance:

1. Dress- The most important factor of a first impression is what you wear because clothing communicates status, dominance, and character. A dark suit is preferable for business environments. However, it is recommended to avoid black as it can be associated with death.

2. Posture- There are a few aspects of posture that are very important to appear dominant.

Size- Those who take up more space are seen as socially in control. If you are of smaller body size, seek stances that take up more space.

Movement- Those who are fluid in their posture and move occasionally are seen as more dominant.

Relaxation- Those who are relaxed do so because they can afford to. If the situation is stressful and you appear relaxed, others will view you as a leader.

3. Facial Expressions- Smiling is not as correlated with happiness as you would like to believe. According to Peter A. Anderson “Smiling is usually an appeasement gesture among humans and nonhuman primates… a submissive gesture often displayed by a prostrate animal to appease a dominant aggressor.” Mayfield Publishing Company. In fact, a stern or somewhat unhappy looking expression communicates authority and encourages submission in others.

4. Eye Contact- If your eyes are direct and do not look away during conversation topics of emphasis you will seem more in control.

These are the main ways that body language can make you appear dominant without seeming excessive.
