Brawl for All: Brawl decks are 57 cards you pick because these two should be in literally every one.
Morning folks, as we all know Brawl is the format sensation that is taking over the nation. Anytime I go to the gamestore everybody is always like yo you wanna play dat Brawl? Of course I say yes everytime.
While deckbuilding diversity is at an all time high in the format, there are two cards that should be in every single deck you make, both based upon power level and the fact that they are colorless, let’s go ahead and start with.
old STONECOIL SERPENT
In so many games this card may as well say “Protection from Generals” considering the glut of Multicolored decks you will run into. It also “scales with the game” or so I’ve heard. Honestly though the kicker (noun not keyword ability) is that it has reach so it can be a killer blocker at even one mana. And even if the opponent has monocolored blockers you can usually beef it up enough to swing in and at least damage one of their planeswalkers (because who are we kidding they have one). Also though it isn’t a problem anymore, this badass card also has “Protection from Oko” which was a big get. Also worth noting is that in the Cavalcade of Calamity deck I’ve made famous sometimes the appropriate thing to do is cast it for one, srsly versatile.

old UGIN THE INEFFABLE
Even if the static ability is just flavor text, this card is just too beefy muscley strong to pass up. OH CHRIS THOUGH THAT FIRST ABILITY IS SO AWKARD IF THEY REFUSE TO BLOCK THE TOKENS! Well doubting Thomas, maybe try pairing him with AMERICA BIRD
AMERICA BIRD
If Ugin ends up “drawing”a killer card you can sac the spirit on the fly (bird puns) and put that card RIGHT IN YOUR DINGDANG HAND. Also unless the opponent is running monobrown aggro Ugin is going to kill at least one thing on the board (though not Stonecoil which makes that card even better). So killin stuff, drawing cards, colorless, WHATS NOT TO LOVE.
“But Chris, this is all fine and good in Arena, but since I mostly play Brawl in person how can I possibly afford these” well, buy and large the print run for these cards was very generous by WOTC so currently these cards cost.
Ugin — A pittance.
Stonecoil — A slightly larger pittance.
I also understand if you are in one of the copious Brawl groups that tend to keep things rather casual. In this case they may despise that these two cards smash them every single time. I think it is up to you then to educate your group and possibly just buy copies for everybody so they can see they are wrong.
