Last December I happened to make several trips to the Marina Bay Sands Casino. Nearby is a premium tea store — I like to drop by as I admire their decor and packaging. During one of these visits I was surprised to find first flush Assam tea on sale — and this was December!
My parents run a tea farm, so I know a thing or two about how tea gets made.
First Flush is defined as the very first plucking of a tea plant’s harvest season. The new growth leaves plucked during First Flush are the youngest and most tender part of the tea plant and are said to yield the purest and freshest cup of tea that plant is capable of producing.
Tea is best consumed closest to its harvest, like any other plant. Assam’s first flush occurs in March & April. If you want to drink the purest Assam tea, you consume it by May. It’s unfortunate for tea that could produce the purest cup, to spend its prime time in shelves and warehouses instead. Unfortunate for the customer drinking in December.
The tea industry could really do better here. My personal mission brewed:
Make the best first flush Assam tea available to international customers in 2 weeks, farm to cup.
The next few evenings got spent studying the mechanics of taking tea from an estate in Assam to the delivery of the final product to sophisticated customers around the world.
I decided to import a limited quantity in May 2018 to do a trial run. In parallel when I reached out to friends, the interest was better than I expected! I sold out! Then it struck me — why not expand the scope and make great tea available to more deserving customers?
I have been lucky to have 4 exceptionally talented friends believe in my mission and contribute their expertise.
After working extremely hard over Christmas holidays up until now, we are stoked to announce our tea brand, Bohaag! 🎉
We’re going to organise a pre-order campaign on Kickstarter to collect orders and deliver fresh tea to you early May 🍵.
Join the list on bohaag.com.
With Bohaag, we’re not just delivering tea, but we also strive to give back to the magical place that enabled us in the first place. Through our branding, we want to introduce the world to the colourful Assamese tradition — it is unfair that most Assam tea packaging speaks nothing of its beautiful motherland.
Together, let’s take the tea industry a few notches above — and indulge in only the best, the fastest, and proudest.
As Salil from Team Bohaag says, “Let’s brew it”.
