This story about giving less, boiled down, in 1:44 minutes.

What’s the fuss?

Despite a signed petition from tens of thousands of streamers, Twitch will not pay their creators more and will even reduce payouts for a few of them.

The situation

The appeal of being a live content creator these days is how lucrative the pursuit can be — all from the comfort of home.

  • Streamers earn money from different sources such as advertising revenue, donations, and subscriptions from fans.
  • Specifically on Twitch, the platform splits revenue 50–50 with most creators and 70–30 (in favour the streamer) exclusively to their most popular talent.

In response to a petition signed by over 22,000 people to increase the standard revenue split to 70–30, Twitch will reduce everyone to the 50–50 split.

  • Twitch cites high operating costs and ensuring all streamers are “on the same set of terms” as the main reasons.
  • The platform’s creators are expectedly in an uproar, many calling this as the “death of Twitch”.

Boiling it down

What makes Twitch great is the talent that fills the platform, but when you anger them they may leave for competitors — resulting in a weaker platform.

Twitch is having a rough week.
