Mizzima TV was established in New Delhi, India, by two veterans of Myanmar’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising. The overarching aim has always been to contribute towards freedom of expression and the realisation of an inclusive and democratic Myanmar for all the country’s people.
However, due to the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, a ban on satellite television threatened independent broadcasters such as Mizzima. An accompanying announcement stated that all news outlets were prohibited from publishing and broadcasting in any type of media or using any sort of technology. However, this crackdown on freedom of the press only strengthened Mizzima’s appeal.
Despite threats of forced closure of its office and freezing of its bank accounts, Mizzima is one of the very few news outlets still continuing to provide unique insight from inside Myanmar, even with the grave risk it poses to the lives of the team. Their steadfastness in the face of overwhelming adversity has helped them reach over 32 million people already, with aspirations to grow this number even further and spread their plea for assistance to the outside world.
