Beneath the Lingerie Veil — A Poem

I can’t believe I wrote this with excitement when I was 17 but I am 19 now and I am glad this poem is finding a home in Breast Stories publication :)

Underwired, medium padded, razorback straps with a colour — burgundy.
This isn’t a lingerie store, but poetry.
Poetry on all the beautiful bras that I own,
machines that cage my boobs in order to protect me.
I know, we’re in a very unhealthy relationship.
In grade 8th, I was constantly told that if I won’t wear a bra,
I’ll lose control over the shape of my breasts.
That I’ll get a lot of unwanted attention
(loved it in the beginning years of my teenage, honestly!),
and that sagging will ruin me completely.
I’m 17 and I love lingerie,
I’d spend more money on it than on my fits.
Don’t get me wrong,
I go broke just for pictures that only I’ll see.

It’s interesting, isn’t it to you?
Well, I call this investing in feeling good in your body,
and if I see another person saying it’s “wasting money”,
I can’t guarantee that I’ll sit still.
Can’t believe I’m the same girl who used to refuse to wear bras my mom bought me
(they were ugly, indeed).
My first real bra had three hooks, a blue-coloured bow on its head, silky straps, and yellow flowers that covered 3/4th of my chest.
Never have my cleavage looked so flattering.
Still can’t stop thinking about it,
couldn’t even take my eyes off me,
when it first touched my body.

Have you read: We Still Need to Talk About it, Period!

Let’s take a second, no — a few big minutes to appreciate this creation.
I don’t consider it as a normal piece in my wardrobe
(that’s why I don’t wash it very often either),
it’s like some electronic item,
made with a lot of thought.
Have you seen its structure?
And all the options? Literally triggers my shopping compulsion.
From colors to types,
I genuinely feel bad for the people who aren’t exploring.
Push-up if you want a little uplifting,
padding to hide your nipples,
sports so you can jump freely,
and the basic everyday ones that don’t serve the purpose but still exist somewhere under the cupboard.
It will take me ages to mention everything available,
if I start speaking again on appreciation,
make sure you stop me immediately.

I don’t hate you if you hate them,
I completely respect your choices.
You’ve your reasons,
let me know if I can help you in any way possible.
I can’t but I would love to,
since you know — I love this, I think it’s fun.
I wonder what the first inventor was thinking,
they must be tired after all the constructioning.
Progress has been made and I learn about a new piece every day.
You need to be a millionaire if you want to own everything you like in the store,
so don’t think about it,
don’t even try if you love your life.
From corsets to well — everything we’ve today,
we sure have grown forward until you wear the wrong size and feel opposite to alright.

Good luck, boobies.
And hugs to the owners (if they like it), obviously.
It’s a beautiful, wire stabbing world outside,
you’ll love it.
