Certain Prey: A Thriller That Leaves You Wanting More

A Review of Certain Prey (2011) USA Network’s super violent and super funny police drama

While I usually read small town cozies I do occasionally read psychological thrillers. Of those my favorite hands down are John Sandford’s Prey novels about video game designer turned police chief Lucas Davenport.

USA Network’s 2011 adaptation is a first class production and does a great job capturing the tone that makes Sandford one of my favorite authors. That tone being a winning combination of suspenseful thrills and absurd humor.

Certain Prey starts with narration by Minneapolis Deputy Police Chief Lucas Davenport (Mark Harmon from NCIS) who introduces himself and the two villains: hitman Clara Rinker (Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black) and crooked lawyer Carmel Loan (Lola Glaudini from Criminal Minds)

While the narration plays Lucas is shown breaking into an apartment wearing a black suit and a stocking over his head to conduct an illegal search and finally assures the viewer that they need to know the whole story to understand what he’s doing.

So right off the bat we’ve got three very big name TV actors in the main roles which is a great sign. The scene also serves to immediately set Lucas apart from…
