Stepping out of my comfort zone

In 1979, I had been living the small-town life in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Nothing ever happened in my town. The local daily newspaper never had any major news to mention. The worst cases were accidents involving trains and there had been few in my lifetime as train travel was on the decline. There hadn’t been a murder or a kidnapping since before I was born.
