Separating fact from fiction in the world of chatGPT AI and SEO

Beware of Unrealistic Claims

I’ve come across many discussions and articles on social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter about ChatGPT’s applications in SEO. Unfortunately, many of these posts contain misinformation and make unrealistic promises. People claim they’ve earned $10k/month with a one-click SEO miracle, but that’s just not true.

Understanding ChatGPT’s Limitations

Some users expect ChatGPT to provide targeted keywords considering their SEO strategy and competition. However, they don’t realize that ChatGPT can’t do competitor, market, or site-specific research yet. It also doesn’t have access to real search data and keyword difficulty (remember, this is for now).

Future ChatGPT plugins might offer such capabilities, but we won’t know for sure until they’re released.

Harnessing ChatGPT for SEO the Right Way

Despite its limitations, ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for SEO tasks when used correctly. For example, I’ve successfully used it for ecommerce and generating meta descriptions based on real data. You can read more about it in this article:

Making the Most of ChatGPT for SEO: Dos and Don’ts

Recommended ChatGPT Uses:

  • Get suggestions for article structure or headlines based on your input.
  • Receive related topic or keyword ideas (verify search volumes with proper tools).
  • Assist in understanding the search intent of specific keywords.
  • Help determine keyword relevancy (I’ve tested this with 30k+ keywords and will share a use case).
  • Rewrite meta titles and descriptions based on current ones and real data.
  • Support advanced technical tasks, such as coding scripts and understanding technical issues.

Not Recommended ChatGPT Uses:

  • Don’t rely on ChatGPT for keyword analysis data (search volume, difficulty, CPC, …).
  • Avoid generating entire articles.
  • Remember, there’s no such thing as a one-click SEO prompt!
  • No, you can’t do competitor analysis with just one prompt, for goodness’ sake.
  • When you give ChatGPT a specific URL (like a product page) as input, it will likely analyze the words in the URL but not the actual content of the page itself.
  • Don’t use generic or short prompts (e.g., expecting perfect headline structures with a prompt like “Create headlines for an article about Samsung TVs”).
