I know how you are feeling. Fear, its one of the biggest emotions we as humans feel. In fact it is steeped in so much history, dating back to when our ancestors first left the cave.

Back then you either looked for your meal, putting yourself in harms way or you starved to death, simple but horrendous options.

Fear can drive us to do many things. It can cause our brain to engage the fight or flight response. Either fight the fear or run away from it. In some situations it can also cause other responses including freeze and flop.

In modern times this fight or flight response is sometimes working overtime and can become unhelpful to us causing us to experience high levels of anxiety.

In January 2022 a lot of us will experience anxiety when we open the credit card statement, begin working out our finances or planning our financial affairs for the next 12 or 18 months.

In recent months my fight or flight response has been switched on and off more times than I care to think about as the reality of a situation took hold. With high emotions running across the board.

What I learned and what I’m still learning is that fear can be controlled. It can be controlled and used as a tool to further your understanding of your own mind and emotions.

Here’s 5 steps to help you control your fear

  1. Fear is a perfectly normal state:- First off to say fear is normal. All humans experience it. You are no different. The fact you are experiencing fear tells me you’re normal and you are either trying something new for the first time, pushing your boundaries or in a situation you perceive to have no control over. So if you are currently frightened of something, remind yourself it is normal.
  2. Become the best at it:- I was once frightened that by running I’d some how end up like my father, dead at the age of 37 from cancer. What did I do? I went and ran anyway, started gradually with Couch to 5k and continued to train week in week out, adjusting my diet and lifestyle accordingly. If you have a fear, test out that fear.
  3. F*ck an accountability buddy:- I’m going to be honest how much do you spend on business, life and wellbeing coaches? If you’re spending any money I’d advise you to stop. Go and spend £60 on a good mirror for your bathroom and get to work with yourself. The only person that is ever going to hold you to account is you. The only person you let down by not facing your fear is you.
  4. Invest in you:- Growth is impossible without sacrifice. To invest in you means you’re going to need give up the TV time, maybe some nights with your mates or perhaps a meal with your partner.
However by investing in you and arming yourself with the tools, skills and necesssary attributes to overcome your fear you will grow.
  5. Take Action:- Stop reading this. Right now and go and do what you were suppose to be doing. Stop making excuses and start taking action right now on the things you want whether it is in business, in your marriage, relationships or in life.

Give these steps a go, don’t rush yourself into thinking you’re not normal because you’re reacting to fear. Embrace your fears and go forward and smash 2022, make it the year you get what you’ve been striving to achieve for so long.

Let me know if it helps.
