Drop everything. When we say everything, we mean everything. Because no matter how many dollar bills you’re counting with your current skill set right now, if you know how to code, you’ve struck gold!

With the current pandemic that has put the whole world under lockdown, one of the many things to have taken a hit is the world economy. The IMF International Monetary Fund) revealed that the world may face the worst economic fallout in 100 years since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The effects are already visible, several industries have completely shut down causing the unemployment rate to skyrocket.

Air and travel, insurance carriers, oil and gas, apparel and luxury are some of the hardest hit sectors. The only industry that has remained as good as neutral is the technology industry. In fact, this is the only industry in which some of the companies/startups have shown remarkably high growth rates.

Relax, we are not about to bombard you with 27 reasons why coding is the skill you should learn in this lockdown (though #quarantineandcode makes a cool hashtag). What we want to let you know is that,

Coding is here to stay. Quarantine or no quarantine.

With most companies going digital, the value of the already flourishing tech industry is soaring higher. Technology has the solution to most of today’s problems.

And when you can solve problems, you have the potential to create a legacy.

Another rather unfortunate outcome is that employees are being laid off left and right, or their salaries are being cut by a percentage.

Good news is that if you turn back the pages of history, you will see that after every recession the economy has bounced back almost immediately.

Dips below the red line indicate economic fallout

Better news is that our current economy is not a victim of structural economic problems (like was the case in previous recessions).

Countries have voluntarily put on hold several of their industries, and normalcy is expected to show as soon as these industries resume work. Though when the lockdowns are lifted across countries, the job hunting space will become more competitive than ever. That will be your moment to shine, fully armed with the most powerful and the hottest skill set — coding.

Additionally, what most small businesses are anticipated to conclude is that permanent work-from-home would make for a more feasible option. Many companies may decide to keep intact their digital transformation for longer time periods, if not permanently. Facing social, economic and environmental paradigm shifts is when society becomes innovation hungry. All you need to do is become the missing piece and finish the picture.

As Steve Jobs rightly said, “Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity — not a threat”
