Introduction

Improving UI skills through UI challenges is a common practice in the design community. In this project, I was given the challenge to redesign an app, to practice UI skills at a rapid pace without the constraints of conducting user research. The app already has content and users. Therefore enables me the opportunity to dedicate more time to creating designs and features.

Information Architecture

My challenge was to redesign an eCommerce called ssense.com. It’s a very minimalistically designed platform with easy to use interface. For this challenge, I was given the task of creating a Snap and search tool, Which users could benefit from taking pictures of an inspirational piece and shopping for items inspired by the picture

UI Design

As part of the visual redesign, the first thing I focused on was replicating the existing screens from the app. Getting every image, working with auto layout, and making sure every text, font size, and color was exactly matching the app.

Next, instead of redesigning it, I focused on creating the Snapsearch widget. I created a camera icon and decorated a seamless button that would blend smoothly with the ssense’s layout and design.

Challenge

Before the new widget, and after

I selected to design a total of 4 screens, that resembled the flow of opening the app and searching with the new widget.

Below, I display the Home screen, Search tab, the brand new Snapsearch feature, and possible results you may get after searching for an item with your camera.

Design Critique

After presenting my project, my peers provided feedback on my work, as well as my teacher in a short design crique I received lots of really good feeback that ultimately helped me imrpove the app and its brand new feature

Target Device

  • Mobile App (either iOS or Android)

Learning outcomes

Creating the SnapSearch app widget for SSENSE.com was a really fun experience in my UX bootcamp journey, offering profound insights into user experience design. Through SnapSearch, I broke out of my comfort zone so i could understand user behavior, learning to anticipate needs and design features that cater to convenience.

Notably, a design critique session yielded invaluable feedback, enhancing the widget’s functionality and usability significantly. Above all, the experience underscored the significance of empathy in user-centric design, empowering me to create solutions that truly resonate with users’ needs and motivations. As I reflect on this journey, I’m equipped with valuable skills in user research, collaboration, and iterative design, poised to embark on future endeavors with confidence as a UX designer.
