Favorite persons are a very hot topic among the borderline personality disorder (BPD) community. In this article, when I say BPD community, I mean both BPD sufferers and their loved ones. You’ve probably seen someone talk about their favorite person if you stumbled upon any forum or group for people with BPD. Before I go any further, here’s what a favorite person is, defined by someone with one (me!). Also a side note, I’m planning on writing a separate article about how other people with BPD can make the relationship with their FP healthy & potentially one for partners of pwBPD. Stay tuned.

A favorite person is one person in a BPD sufferer’s life that they cannot function without. In most instances, favorite persons are crushes, partners, friends, or other people who the pwBPD interacts within their life (teachers, for instance). The term “favorite person” is unique to the BPD community because of the unhealthy attachment the pwBPD has towards their favorite person.

Having a favorite person doesn’t mean that someone has BPD, but it is very common for someone with BPD to have a favorite person. Make sense? Some of the symptoms of BPD related to having an FP include unstable relationships and fear of abandonment. These two factors are what complicates the…
