Only Two Factors Needed for Great Writing

It’s not complicated. The problem is that few can do it.

I am fascinated by all the articles on how to write well. So much advice, and so little of it pertinent. So what are the two factors required for great writing?

Grammar, Grammar, and Grammar is the First One

Forget about all the bullarkey that grammar doesn’t matter. Forget the ‘You have to know the rules in order to break the rules.’ Sure, technically speaking one shouldn’t use one word sentences — they’re called fragments. There is, however, another rule that supercedes that one. That’s the rule of rhythm. Think!

There, I just used that one word, and it did exactly what I asked you to. For a moment you thought. Did I break a rule? Absolutely not. Not only was it a complete thought in one word, but the word fitted in a rthymic way, and rhythm in writing is one of the prime factors of good writing.

Outstanding grammar, regardless of whether you want to believe it or not, is a requirement of good style.

The Interest Factor is Number Two

Most people on Medium tend to be grammatical writers. I haven’t seen much in the way of lamentable language. It’s the number two that is crazy…
