Enzo’s Monday Motion #171: Car Blockbusters
This week I go BIG: five horsepower driven blockbuster commercials which will put you on the edge of your (car)seat.
Make every day legendary
The Bavarian brand has a heritage when it comes to feature film campaigns. They won’t disappoint you with this trailer-ish spot…
A pinch of Hulk, some Harry Potter fairy dust and a spoonful of Mad Max. Director Dante Ariola manoeuvres the new BMW X7 SAV in 75 seconds through multiple challenges. Seven to be precise (which isn’t an accident) with brilliant VFX by MPC. For the fans there’s a very nice making of with break down shots.
Keep on Truckin’
The most badass truck of all times has arrived…
More Mad Max, but this one is based on a different angle: war-lords. From native tribes from the South American forest to their Northern cowboy equivalent.
Another difference is the use of voiceover. Director Vellas lets the action do the talking. When the voiceover finally kicks in it starts logically with the badass reference. I don’t really get the follow up though (There’s never been soo much innovation in a pickup truck). Fighting classic warriors and innovation don’t really match. As if they were battling between two different call to actions. A bit of a miss, but very enjoyable in the end. Produced by Saigon.
Join Forces
Cerberus the three headed hell hound and GoT Drogon had a love baby in Renault Brazil’s latest spot.
The movie-mash-up continuous with a Hobbit, Harry Potter, his invisibility cloak and a league of hero’s which smell like Marvel. The beloved car chase shots show all the exterior features. Director Vellas and his team learned from the previous one and end great. I love the plot with a smart close up of the model’s name. It all feels very natural with the story line.
Bad ending…
Vauxhall, aka Opel’s reversed-steering brand, uses well-known fairy tales to empower their new (standard) feature.
McCann Velocity’s concept is simply said super clever. By choosing familiar stories, the backward concept becomes even more intriguing. Production agency Coffee & TV really delivered a funny and loveable spot.
The ad agency didn’t stop at one fairy tale, but asked two other production agencies to produce a stop motioned Cinderella and a CGI-version of The Ugly Duckling. Watch the case study of the full set over here.
Mother of Mash-Ups
Let’s go out with a bang…
Ok, Wall Mart might not be a car brand, but oh my God…. how did they pull off to get clearance for all these (super)cars…?!
The ad, by Publicis Groupe premiered smartly during the Golden Globe Awards. The concept is brilliant, the execution is even better. If Walmart would be in The Netherlands, I would drop my Appie grocery bag in a split second.
Enzo Greco is Motion Director at Born05.
