Enzo’s Monday Motion #183: In the ocean of design festivals, there’s one that stands out for over two decades: OFFF. The festival has been growing over the years and spreads out over multiple continents. An ode to possibly the best festival network for digital work.

Barcelona — part I

It all started in 2001 in the capital of Catalonia. I want to take you to the main titles of 2017 which was an hommage to Oscar-winning 1982 film “Tango” by Zbigniew Rybczyński.

The title sequence kept the experimental style of the Polish director and added a Wes Anderson grading and colour pallet. It does wat a title sequence needs to do: present the lineup and the overall theme to the crowd.

Barcelona — part II

If you’re as popular as OFFF, you can simply ask for a separate, totally new title sequence to open your festival. Outro Studio was asked to tell a story about first-time experiences.

The feature film style is actually fairly common in festival trailers. In this case, director Marc Castellví was ‘liberated‘ with the lineup text. I’m particularly impressed with the sound design by Aimar Molero. Especially since the story is about a deaf man (and his first hearing experience). Top-notch work which fits this high-end festival.

Porto

Portugal was one of the first countries who adopted the official OFFF formula. Director duo Jules Janaud and Fabrice Le Nezet, aka bif, were completely free to deliver the main titles. The end result was a result of a happy accident in the creative process.

Initially, the duo wanted to furtherly develop 3D character research. Playing around with motion-captured rigs, the created this minimal character. With help of Mill+, they ended up with a (for those days) fresh and funny film.

Mexico City

Framestore Design Studio created a piece which was based around the four elements air, water, fire, and earth.

From the fields of fashion to beauty and (local) fine art. The team found their inspiration in many creative areas. The whole story is modeled in Cinema4D and rendered in Octane.

Vienna

Last year Austria joined the OFFF network with main titles by directed, designed and animated by the local design studio EAT MY DEAR.

The video starts as you expect from the classical country. I like how they change the atmosphere on the (musical) drop. Another strong feature is the rich embedded titles. Not only do they fit conceptually, but even more on an aesthetic point of view.

Kiev

The youngest ‘member’ of the club is Ukraine. Local artists Eugene Pylinsky & Eugene Lekh were able to create this out-of-this-world piece…

The cosmonautic theme is executed very well. I do think the calligraphy by Vikatata feels a bit dislocated and hard to read. Besides that a worthy addition to the growing community of OFFF.

Last Week

Want the impact of a full feature film with only a short commercial? It’s possible if you make the right connection. Six brands who borrow the impact from classic blockbusters.
