Let’s go back to the very beginning of animation, where every frame is hand drawn: cel animation.

Senna

Ayrton Senna is more than a Formula 1 racer. He’s an icon of overcoming hardship, stubbornness and good character. For the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the “Instituto Ayrton Senna” asked JWT to tell the beautiful message from Senna to all the Brazilian athletes where he points out the importance of winning at home.

A Masterpiece by Le Cube that takes you through the rollercoaster of a winning race.

The story so far

BBC Introducing asked Contra to create a short animation documenting the story of an exciting new British musical talent. Jack Garratt is currently top of the BBC’s ‘Sound of 2016′ poll and has had an impressive rise to fame. Nice visual concept by Contra where cel animation is blended smoothly with live action fan footage.

Mixing media

I love the approach of Marty Cooper a.k.a. Hombre McSteez. Armed with an iPhone, sharpie, paint pens, and lots of transparent sheets, he’s on a quest to turn everyday life into a cartoon filled with strange creatures. A brilliant live mix of live action and cel animation.

For more of his work also check Part 1 and Part 2.

Flaws

Artist Josh Shaffner created a motion piece from 18 of his pencil drawings.

Synapse

The history of the world and the future to come, in the blink of an eye. Directed by Sean Conner and motion by Sarah Schmidt, Karl Fekete, Chavilah Bennett and Andrew Mark.
