As we’re right in the middle of the most important year so far for Voice Design and Development, we thought it would be good to recap the top words/terms that are circulating around voice.

This list was compiled to help educate the type of trends to be watching, and to hopefully inspire deeper dives into different concepts around Voice that can help any brand/company craft better Voice experiences for their audience, or even their own employees.

Multi-Modal

In the world of Voice/Bots, one word that’s been moving around a lot is the concept of “Multi-Modality”. The idea of bringing Voice-Activated screens is something that’s been a major talking point, and now, it’s really making its way out of a small circle in the form of the upcoming Alexa Show and new Google Homes that have more of a screen layout rather than just the classic speaker style.

Outside of the in-home market, Multi-Modality is working into the world of the workforce with potential office resources and also into the car industry in the form of better voice-activated experiences in upcoming vehicles, activated by platforms like Alexa, but enhanced by car manufacturers themselves.

VUI Design

VUI Design, or Voice User Interface Design, has become a largely popular term based on the growth of a new job title that has been added to several innovation teams and even designated voice teams as more and more major players start to shift their focus on new ways to interact with customers.

If you haven’t read it yet, we actually already covered more about what VUI Design is in another post. There you can learn more about the new role and how it may work into the grand vision for the future of Voice.

Personalization

As with every new technology, personalization of the user experience always becomes an exciting topic that keeps designers, developers, and product managers constantly trying out new experiments to better adjust to certain customer segments.

When it comes down to it, each user can be much more satisfied and “hooked” to a product if they feel like it was truly made to cater to them, and really has a solid purpose in their life outside of a cool novelty that everyone else has.

Artificial Intelligence

This might be one of the hottest topics consistently outside of Voice, but can still really be something to keep an eye out for. With the idea of more and more custom solutions and voice platforms coming for different types of utility, the idea of better automation and intelligence gets only more and more important.

From voice-activated cars to sales tools, understanding a user’s request isn’t just the demand anymore. Taking the request and turning it into an advanced automated process that can adapt, personalize, and build on itself is the key to what can continue being one of the biggest revolutions in voice, in 2019 and beyond.
