“Saying gun control hurts our freedom is a false argument amounting to propaganda. Gun laws don’t curtail freedom any more than speed limits or seat belts. You still get to drive your car and have guns, we’re just trying to save lives as you do.” — DaShanne Stokes

It was a beautiful day in Uvalde, Texas. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and children were playing. But then, in an instant, everything changed.

A mass shooting at a local school left dozens of people dead and injured and the community reeling.

In the wake of this tragedy, Matthew McConaughey stepped up to deliver a speech yesterday at the White House. And his words are some of the most powerful I’ve ever heard. He was passionate and eloquent; his message was simple: we need to do something about gun violence.

The importance of healing and having counselors available for students and families was also stressed.

It’s time for us to come together and demand action on gun violence. We can’t let another mass shooting happen. We can’t let another community be torn apart by this senseless violence.

One of the things he mentioned that struck a chord was restricting sensational media coverage in the aftermath of mass shootings.

“If it bleeds, it leads,” is an unfortunately accurate motto in today’s media landscape. And too often, this coverage only serves to glorify the shooter and further traumatize the survivors and witnesses.

It’s time for a change. It’s time for us to come together and demand action on gun violence.

Even if that goal makes it more difficult to get firearms, that’s a step in the right direction.

If we can work together to make our schools and communities safer, perhaps we can prevent another mass shooting one day. But we need to start somewhere.

Matthew spoke about “responsible gun ownership,” but what is that?

It is different for everyone, but it starts with a conversation. So let’s have that conversation. Let’s talk about what we can do to make our schools and communities safer.

We are not all going to agree on everything, but we can all agree that gun violence is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Not every gun owner will be a mass shooter, but every mass shooter has been a gun owner.

Thank you, Matthew McConaughey, for speaking up and demanding change. Your voice is powerful, and we need more like it. Thank you for your leadership.

Join me in supporting Matthew McConaughey’s call for action. Let’s make sure that no other family has to experience the heartbreak of losing a loved one to gun violence.
